A Positive Perspective For Recent College Graduates Background Generation Y are those born between 1977 and 1994. It accounts for 20% of the United States population, the largest generation since the baby boomers and are currently graduating college and hitting the job market.
Our Perspective There are two different ways for recent college graduates to approach our economies current condition. The first is of desperation and no hope for the future. The second is to understand that we are in a recession and it will be on us to play a huge role in lifting our society back into prosperity.
Why Us? We are the largest generation since the baby boomers. On top of that, we are the most educated and the most tech savvy generation ever; bottom line is, it will be on us to change the world. We have the abilities, the optimism and the talent to create change. That is why the job market is so difficult right now. Apart from being in a recession, more people are graduating from college than ever before. What’s more, it’s not just the rich privileged children that are obtaining college degrees. A college degree is available for anyone determined enough to put in the effort. These are the kids who are motivated enough to work long hours while attending class, who really grinded college out, all in the hopes of eventually graduating and impacting the world. There is no reason to sit on the sideline and speculate when it will be our turn to start making a difference. We need to realize that we have the ability to start making an impact right now. Not only do we have the abilities, but it is essential that we do so. Our environment, economy and social identity are depending on us to get things going in the right direction.
The boomers are over rated (Those born between 1944 and 1966) We all hear how great the baby boomers are. Yes, they do count for around 25% of the population and almost 50% of the wealth but they are not all they are made out to be. You want evidence? Look at the current state of our environment, national debt and current gap between the lower and upper class. I am not looking to point fingers, but the boomers have the most influence over our society and thus must shoulder the blame for its current condition. They have given us great things and taken our society to new levels. However, we have hit the preverbal ceiling under their leadership and a new generation of leaders must emerge for our society to start moving forward again.
Why sit back and wait for them to retire when we can force them out? It is time that their old ways of thought move out of the way to make room for ours. Their old management styles are not going to sustain themselves as we move further into the 21st century. The large corporate bureaucracies they have established that demoralize its employees and hinder creativity will slowly fade out. Smaller, more employee oriented companies that reward creativity and personal growth will emerge. The technology available presently available allows companies to be large but on a small scale. At one point in time, infrastructure costs made it virtually impossible for smaller companies to make a big difference regardless of the industry. Now the high pre-qualification costs of doing business, such as offices, computer hardware and travel costs can be substituted with affordable technologies.
What does that mean for us? No one is better prepared and more capable to take advantage of affordable technologies than we are. It will be our fresh ideas and new ways of doing business that take our society to the next level. So instead of sitting around and being frustrated about the current job market, take this time to realize we are the verge of a revolution where we are the major players. What role will you play?
